Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd’s (PBPL) ‘Green Button’ project was celebrated at last night’s Infrastructure Partnerships Australia National Infrastructure Awards in Sydney taking home the Innovation Excellence award.
The ‘Green Button’ technology aims to help reduce PBPL’s scope 3 emissions attributed to commercial vessels transiting the Port’s ~90km shipping channel.
Developed in partnership with DHI Seaport, Green Button integrates with PBPL’s existing vessel management system (NCOS Online), optimising vessel target speeds within operational transit windows and reducing fuel consumption.
PBPL Chief Executive Officer, Neil Stephens, said the first-of-its-kind trial had exceeded expectations.
“Shipping emissions from vessels transiting the Port’s channel are the biggest contributor to our scope 3 emissions; the early success of Green Button is encouraging as we strive to significantly reduce these,” Mr Stephens said.
“In early trials the technology showed positive results, outperforming its expected 10% emissions reduction per vessel. We’re continuing to explore the full potential of this technology to ensure functionality meets stakeholders’ requirements.
“More than ~2500 vessels call at the Port every year, presenting a unique opportunity for PBPL to assist our shipping line customers to potentially drive emissions reductions whilst their vessels are operating at the Port.
“This is an exciting project and we’re grateful for the ongoing support and collaboration of our partners – DHI Seaport, Maritime Safety Queensland–Regional Harbour Master, Poseidon Sea Pilots and shipping line customers Maersk and CMA CGM.”
Infrastructure Partnerships Australia’s national recognition marks the third award for ‘Green Button’, having received the DCN Australia Shipping and Maritime Industry Environmental Award and the QIC Infrastructure Award for Sustainability in 2024.
