The Port of Brisbane is a cornerstone of the Queensland economy as Australia’s third largest container port and the state’s largest multi-cargo port.
PBPL is committed to investing in the sustainable development of the Port and to facilitating the trade requirements needed to support our region’s growing population.
PBPL is currently in the early stages of considering the future requirements of its shipping channel.
Why is this project important?
The proposed 25-year Port of Brisbane Channel Enhancement Project aims to ensure the shipping channel servicing the port improves efficiency, reduces vessel emissions, and caters for the future needs of the global shipping market.
The project will include the potential deepening and widening of existing navigational channels, as well as minor re-alignments.
Project update
The proposed program requires approvals from both the Queensland and Australian governments.
To commence this process, PBPL has made an application to the Australian Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and has also made an application to the Queensland Coordinator-General for the Channel Development Program to be declared a ‘coordinated project’ requiring an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
7 August 2024 – Public notification of the EPBC Act referral.
12 September 2024 – The Queensland Coordinator-General declared the project a ‘coordinated project’ for which an EIS is required. Further information can be found HERE.
26 April 2025 – The Queensland Coordinator-General released draft Terms of Reference (TOR) for public comment. Click here to view. The Coordinator-General will consider all comments before finalising the TOR. The closing date for public comments is 26 May 2025.
