Leanne Johnston

HOW THE NUMBERS ADD UP FOR A SUCCESSFUL ACCOUNTING CAREER AT PBPL

If we were to describe Leanne Johnston's career with PBPL in one word, it would have to be 'exciting'. There is never a dull moment for our Senior Accountant, thanks to the variety of projects she is an integral part of. Since joining as a Finance Officer in 2008, Leanne has risen through the ranks of PBPL to where she is now. Here, Leanne reflects on why she is determined to make a difference at PBPL and how it all started.

THE ULTIMATE CHOICE

Like many other 20-somethings, Leanne was unsure which career path to take. She tried her hand at business and management before deciding it was not quite right for her. After gaining experience in bookkeeping, Leanne began to consider that a role in accounting could be in her future—but it was not until she spoke to a recruiter that her story with PBPL took form.

"The recruiter said I could go to an interview with PBPL or another company in Durack. So, I went for both and got offers from both businesses."

Leanne had an important choice to make. Ultimately, she fell in love with our stunning location—and the rest is history!

"The Port had all of these beautiful, landscaped gardens and views. That is what drew me here at first. And I'm grateful I made the right decision."

At PBPL, we have seen Leanne go from strength to strength. She started as a Finance Officer until she finished her degree, and then we welcomed her as our newest Accountant. Leanne has since held many other positions, working her way up to becoming a dedicated Senior Accountant. The progression has kept her engaged, and Leanne says her team is always encouraged to forge their own path.

"I've learned so many new skills, from bookkeeping all the way to accounting. They are always willing to help you develop your career, even if it includes more studying. And you get to do it alongside really friendly and open people."

A DIVERSE OPERATION WHERE EVERY DAY’S DIFFERENT

For Leanne, there is no such thing as a typical day at PBPL. You could find her in important meetings with our infrastructure team or diligently preparing the financial results of the Port. As Senior Accountant, Leanne says the diversity of projects means she is always left wanting more.

"It's ever-evolving. There is always something big happening. I saw the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) go from an idea to coming to life. Being part of that is exciting."

Leanne plays a vital role in the ongoing success of PBPL. We know the support she provides to the different areas of our business is invaluable, whether she is producing end-of-financial-year statements or educating people on various accounting policies. Leanne and the financial team work closely to ensure we continue to smash targets, and they are proud of how their efforts make a difference.

"We're an integral part of the company", Leanne says. "I never have a problem approaching people or asking for advice. We're very committed to reaching our deadlines."

When Leanne joined PBPL 14 years ago, she could not have anticipated the longevity of her role and the many opportunities that would become available to her. She feels grateful for the opportunity to be involved in so many projects and being able to experience the business from different angles. Accountants often have several different career routes they can pursue upon earning their qualifications, and Leanne feels that choosing PBPL has been the right choice, one that has allowed her to grow and develop new skills. It is a role like no other.

"It's a more diverse role than what you would get in an accounting firm. We have trade, we have tenants, we have a dredging team—the list goes on. I am exposed to so many facets of the business, more than just numbers."

FLEXIBILITY TO THRIVE

As a mum of two, there is nothing more fulfilling for Leanne than seeing her kids' smiling faces. With one daughter in kindergarten and a one-year-old, Leanne certainly has her hands full! Thanks to PBPL's flexible work options, she can balance her days better, giving her more time to spend with the family.

"We can work from home for a few days a week, which has been great. I can drop my kids off at daycare a little later, and it is nice to see them as soon as they come through the door. I enjoy having that balance because I also want to go into the office and spend time with my colleagues."

Leanne loves that the Port is close to her home too and coming to the office and being greeted by her team, whom she describes as kind and hard-working. The culture is great, and she pictures herself achieving so much more in the many years to come.

"Some people like to change workplaces every few years, but I have never had that pull. I really enjoy my job, and I have everything I need here at PBPL.” We are certainly pleased to have Leanne in our team, supporting her growth through these years and watching her build this exciting, multi-faceted career with us.
