After 17 years at the Port of Brisbane, Peter Brabant has seen it all. From his early days in security, to working at our Brisbane Multimodal Terminal to now in his current role in Port Services, Peter’s journey reflects the Port’s evolution: grounded in experience, driven by care, and always looking ahead.
“I wish I’d found this line of work earlier,” Peter says. “Every day is different, and that’s what keeps me here. It’s a great industry.”
Peter’s career has spanned both land and waterside operations and his commitment to safety and continuous improvement has earned him a reputation as a quiet achiever, recently nominated for the Port’s annual Employee Awards in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing category and named as a finalist in the Integrity category.
Leading safety upgrades
One of Peter’s proudest achievements is leading a recent safety overhaul at Pinkenba Wharf.
“We realised we could be more efficient if we took the time to review and investigate some reoccurring maintenance jobs.” Peter explains. “Eventually, we stopped and asked: how can we do this better?”
With that, Peter and the team re-thought how people move through the site, from car park to ship.
Working closely with colleagues across Infrastructure and Facilities Management, Peter helped implement reverse parking protocols, install safety bumpers, and redesign walkways with clear line marking. The upgrades also included new amenities and security buildings, transforming the site into a safer, more efficient space for everyone.
“It took a few months, but doing it right was key,” Peter says. “Safety isn’t just about ticking boxes, it’s about making sure people get home safe every day.”
A culture of care and collaboration
Craig Barbour, Executive General Manager Port Services, has worked closely with Peter and witnessed the impact of these improvements firsthand.
“Peter is extremely passionate and genuinely cares,” Craig says. “He is solutions focused and has led the way in renewing safe walkways and identifying end of life infrastructure. He’s highly visible and proactive, always working to do the right thing.”
Peter’s approach to safety is grounded in personal accountability and teamwork. “If you see something, say something,” he says. “I try to make sure that happens for everyone around me.”
Craig adds, “Peter’s mindset reflects what ‘every job, every day’ is all about. Safety is our licence to operate. If we’re not ensuring the safety of our people, we shouldn’t be operating.”
A quiet achiever with a big impact
Though Peter prefers to keep a low profile, his contributions haven’t gone unnoticed.
From installing giant fans at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal for passenger comfort, to supporting infrastructure upgrades across the Port, he’s played a key role in projects that improve both safety and experience, for workers and the community alike.
“I don’t look for credit,” Peter says. “I just like helping people and doing the job well.”
His typical day involves site rounds, safety conversations, and staying flexible for whatever the day brings. “You never know what’s coming,” he says. “That’s why I do the rounds and stay connected. I’m also currently completing my Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.”
Looking ahead
Peter’s story is one of leadership, experience, and commitment.
Craig agrees. “Peter’s care, passion, and willingness to get involved make him a standout. He’s not just improving safety, he’s mentoring others and helping shape a culture where doing the right thing is second nature.”
As the Port continues to evolve, it’s people like Peter Brabant who ensure its proud reputation is guided by a safe future.
