The Port of Brisbane Virtual Energy Network (VEN) has won the Logistics & Transport category in the Financial Review Sustainability Leaders for 2026.
These celebrate organisations that are turning sustainability ambitions into measurable impact and recognise innovations that address sustainability challenges while creating value for businesses, communities, and the economy.
The Port of Brisbane VEN works by ‘virtually sharing’ locally generated renewable energy between PBPL-operated and participating customer sites in the energy network.
From the initial trial on some PBPL-operated sites in 2021, the VEN was expanded during FY26 to be available to port customers. Customers who voluntarily participate in the initiative enter a commercial agreement with energy retailer, Momentum Energy.
PBPL CEO, Neil Stephens, said the Port was delighted with the recognition for its sustainability efforts and the Virtual Energy Network initiative.
“To the best of our knowledge, the Port of Brisbane Virtual Energy Network is the first application of its kind in the Australian ports sector,” said Mr Stephens.
“From its initial trial in 2021, the VEN’s evolved into an initiative that Port of Brisbane customers can now participate in, expanding access and supporting the sustainability ambitions of PBPL and our customers.
Along with PBPL-operated sites, there are now 11 port customers participating in the VEN.
“Through our long-term Vision 2060 ambitions, we’re continuing to explore opportunities to expand renewable energy solutions across the Port of Brisbane more broadly, and the Virtual Energy Network is a key initiative supporting these efforts.
