Haleen Singh

There’s a common misconception that working at a port means you're only dealing with ships and cargo. But for Haleen Singh, it’s about so much more. As Planning Advisor, Haleen plays a vital role in shaping the Port of Brisbane’s future, one development approval and strategic planning project at a time. In fact, it's been the best career she never imagined – one that's taken her down unexpected paths and opened exciting doors.

Q. You started as a Graduate Planner and within 14 months, you were promoted to Planning Advisor. What was the transition process like?

Starting as a graduate, I was grateful to be surrounded by an incredibly supportive team. That played a big part in my development. Everyone was approachable, always willing to help, and made the transition into the workplace feel smooth and easy. Moving into the Planning Advisor role was just as seamless, and what I really love about working at the Port is the people, especially my team. The conversations we have, from the future of energy to the cruising industry, keep things fascinating and fresh.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about what you focus on day-to-day?

In terms of a typical workday, I focus on development assessment and advocacy. This involves providing planning advice, facilitating the development assessment process, and working with port customers and our stakeholders. I also work on strategic planning projects which I find fascinating!

Q: The Port of Brisbane is an economic powerhouse driving the Queensland economy, and every role plays a part. How does your role as Planning Advisor contribute to the bigger picture?

As I mentioned, an important part of my job is facilitating the development assessment process. I work with both new and existing customers, especially when they want to change the use of their land – whether it’s a small tweak or something more complex that needs state approvals, like major hazard facilities or environmental licensing. I handle everything from minor projects to large-scale developments. I am also involved in strategic planning projects that help shape the Port’s future.

Q: Many of our team members say they found the best career they never imagined at Port of Brisbane. What path led you to discover this unique opportunity, and was working at a Port always on your radar?

After graduating from the University of Queensland in 2021, I moved to Coffs Harbour and started working for my previous employer – a one-woman show running a small but top-notch town planning consultancy. I learned a lot from her, it was an incredible experience and kick-started my career as a Planner. Next, I joined a much larger multidisciplinary consultancy. Then, life took me back to Brisbane, and I explored all kinds of career paths within planning – from transport and social planning to urban design and climate-responsive cities. The variety in planning careers is amazing, and I wanted to find something that matched my interests. That’s when I came across the role at the Port.

Q. What was it about port planning that grabbed your attention and made you dive into such a unique and unexpected career path? What stood out to you the most about working at the Port?

It was a completely different direction I hadn't considered before – working at a port was both technical and fascinating, especially its large scale and trade volumes. I hadn’t realised how important ports are to the economy, especially in a fast-growing container port like Brisbane, which handles billions in international trade each year. I couldn’t believe the numbers, and it made me really excited about the unique opportunities in this field.

Q: The Port handles approximately $72 billion in international trade each year. How does it feel to know you're contributing to something that will impact the Port’s growth and history for years to come?

It’s incredibly rewarding to work in this space, where I truly feel like I’m contributing to something bigger. As a Planner, I’m not just watching impressive developments take shape – I’m also playing a role in the broader economic picture and supply chain. It’s amazing to think about how the Port has evolved over time, from its history to the development of the rail network, and how all that has led to where we are today. I feel as though I’m contributing to something that will be part of history, knowing that in 30 or 50 years, I’ll have had a small role in the Port’s growth and development. From a land use planning perspective, it’s a really great feeling.

Q: The Port provides a lot of work diversity, not just for your team but across the board. What keeps you motivated and excited about your career in planning, and how does the Port support your ongoing growth and development?

As a Planner, there’s never a dull moment, and I truly believe that if you're not learning, you're not growing – whether it's professionally or personally. The Port provides so many opportunities to learn and grow every day, which makes my future here really exciting. I’m also big on professional development – always looking for new ways to grow and get involved. Since starting with the Port, I’ve loved getting involved in a wide range of opportunities including panel discussions, multiple committees, and attending planning conferences.

For me, professional development covers a wide range of topics, all either directly or indirectly related to planning. From attending industry events to organising forums and tours, there’s always chances to grow and engage.

Q: What are some of your highlights from the past 18 months?

I’ve worked on exciting property projects such as Electrolux and Blue Water Shipping. Electrolux for example is the first development for the Port targeting a 6-Star Green Star rating, setting a new standard for what sustainability can look like for an industrial development. To be a part of that team and play my part is extremely rewarding.

I also recently had the chance to be a guest on the Hustle and Bustle podcast, which was a fantastic experience. The podcast is hosted by an experienced urban and regional planner, so I was honoured to be invited as an expert city shaper. I never thought I would speak on a podcast. I’m also involved in strategic meetings on long-term planning projects. I organise the annual Port Planning and Environment Forum and lead port tours for groups, which is really rewarding.

Q: What are you most proud of during your time at the Port?

For me, it’s all about the people, the professional development and the excitement of being involved in such diverse activities and roles. The Port has played a big part in my growth, not just in terms of job titles, but in offering the support I need to pursue my interests. I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made, and the people around me have been instrumental in helping me grow.

Q: What would you say to someone considering a career at Port of Brisbane?

I’d say, give it a go! The Port of Brisbane is an incredibly supportive environment where you can step outside your comfort zone and try new things. It really feels like a family here, with people who are always ready to help. Whether you're looking to expand your network, attend industry events or dive into unique projects, the Port gives you the freedom and encouragement to explore what really interests you. It’s an amazing place to work!
