Meet Michelle Rogers, the Port’s Manager Technology PMO
Like many working at the Port of Brisbane, Michelle Rogers never imagined the diversity of the job, opportunity for growth and enjoyment she’d find in her role.
Now four years in, Michelle was recently appointed Manager Technology PMO, where she is responsible for overall Project Management and the planning of activities for IT projects to deliver the Port’s innovation agenda and help steer the business through its next stage of digital transformation.
For Michelle, the diversity of work is a welcome challenge.
With a significant pipeline of projects across the company, Michelle partners with the Technology team and wider business to ensure the Port has the tech platforms that meet our current and future requirements, with cyber security and sustainability at the core of every IT project.
She’s worked on several key projects with specialised stakeholders across the business, and is constantly analysing, maintaining, and upgrading our systems and software.
"The diversity of work really surprised me, there’s always something significant happening which keeps the role really exciting."
Helping drive sustainability through technology
Through digital transformation, Michelle and the Technology team are driving exciting projects across the Port to help achieve our ambitious sustainability goals.
As Manager Technology PMO, Michelle helps identify and implement technology solutions that are not just best for business, but also support the organisation’s broader sustainability objective of minimising its impact footprint by conserving natural resources or reducing carbon emissions.
“It’s fantastic to work for an organisation where leaders don’t just say what they’re doing, they deliver. We have ambitious sustainability goals here at the Port of Brisbane and it’s very exciting to work on a range of projects that are helping to achieve those goals.”
Some of these exciting projects include the installation of a new fuel monitoring system on the Port’s flagship vessel, TSHD Brisbane, which will help the our Marine team accurately determine fuel consumption, ultimately helping to improve efficiency while reducing emissions – supporting the Port’s sustainability objectives. Another exciting Project Michelle and the team are bringing to fruition is analysing trends in water billing to help reduce water usage across Fisherman Islands and the Port Gate estate. For Michelle, the diversity of Projects is more than she ever imagined in an IT role.
“It's a much more diverse role than what you would get in most organisations.”
“We have so many components to the business which I’m exposed to on a daily basis – whether its working with the infrastructure team, down at the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal (BMT), or working with our dredge team – all requiring innovative technology solutions and support.”
What keeps her coming back
With a family of four kids, the flexibility the Port allows Michelle to tag-team with her husband to ensure school drop-offs and pick-ups are covered, ensuring her days are better balanced and she has more time to spend with her family.
“A lot of organisations say they’re flexible, but the Port of Brisbane truly is – it’s a high trust environment and I’m very thankful to work for an organisation that demonstrates a flexible working environment every day.”
“The culture is fantastic – on top of the great work we get to do, it’s the people that make every day a lot of fun, we have a great team.”
