The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) has launched Vision 2060, an ambitious roadmap designed to strengthen Queensland’s economic position, future-proof trade, and support the transition to a more sustainable and efficient port.
PBPL CEO, Neil Stephens said Vision 2060 was about anticipating change—and leading it.
“The way we trade and move goods is evolving, and Vision 2060 positions the Port of Brisbane to be at the forefront of that change,” Mr Stephens said.
Developed in collaboration with industry, government and community partners, and underpinned by research, Vision 2060 charts a journey for the Port of Brisbane to drive economic growth and prosperity while embracing innovation and environmental stewardship.
By 2060, Queensland’s population is expected to reach 8.3 million, with trade growing and evolving to keep pace. Container trade is projected to triple and cruise passenger volumes more than quadruple. There is also the potential that energy demand could increase ten-fold as the broader port community seeks to decarbonise.
This significant growth presents both challenges and opportunities to reimagine the way infrastructure is planned, delivered and operated—ensuring it is more agile, resilient and responsive to future demands.
Vision 2060 presents three key horizons that will guide the Port of Brisbane’s future:
- Seamless connectivity – developing an integrated, intelligent logistics ecosystem that unlocks new efficiencies, supports global supply chains, and connects Queensland businesses to the world
- Clean energy – scaling and integrating renewables with solar, wind and hydrogen solutions that supports a port-wide net zero emissions future and positions the Port as a clean energy leader
- Designed for future generations – prioritising resilient infrastructure, a skilled workforce, environmental conservation and sustainable economic growth.
“This is an opportunity to create a port that is cleaner, smarter and more connected, that will drive Queensland’s continued prosperity for generations to come,” Mr Stephens said.
“Vision 2060 is an invitation to all our stakeholders – a call to innovate, collaborate and shape a globally competitive port that continues to deliver long-term value.”
Modelling from DAE suggest by 2060, the port and its supply chain could contribute $25 billion in economic value to Queensland, while supporting 125,000 jobs.
Mr Stephens said sustainability was at the heart of the vision.
“Our vision goes beyond business as usual. Ultimately, this is about ensuring Brisbane’s port of the future is driven by seamless connectivity, powered by clean energy and designed for future generations,” he said.
“We have a deep sense of responsibility to those who work at the port and the communities it serves. The Port will continue to lead and create shared value, working closely with local communities to create jobs and develop partnerships that have a positive impact.”
An enhanced Brisbane International Cruise Terminal will also play a pivotal role in driving Queensland’s cruise industry into the future, with an expanded facility elevating the passenger experience and prioritising sustainable operations.
“Queenslanders and Australians are passionate about cruise. We know the demand is there for more cruising and we believe additional capacity at the BICT will help Brisbane become the national capital for cruising in the decades to come,” said Mr Stephens.
Vision 2060 identifies a number of initiatives designed to deliver a world-class supply chain for south-east Queensland, including:
- Dedicated freight road and rail connections
- Integrated regional logistics hubs
- Autonomous zero-emission road corridors
- Channel capacity upgrades
- Cruise terminal expansion
- Electrified port operations
- Renewable energy generation
- Low-carbon fuel infrastructure
- AI-enabled cargo coordination
- Workforce development and innovation precinct
- Climate-resilient and adaptable infrastructure
- Vertical warehousing and modular design
- Enhanced physical and digital security
- Waste-to-energy solutions and circular economy
- Coastal resilience and biodiversity protection
Mr Stephens said Vision 2060 represented a series of aspirational commitments and served as a call to all interested parties to work together to achieve these aims.
