Simin Sabah

A career change can be daunting. But sometimes, the most unexpected paths can lead to the greatest opportunities. That was the case for Utilities Engineer, Simin Sabah. Read on to discover why the right move for your career might be the one you never saw coming.

An exciting new pathway

For Simin, stepping into the role of Utilities Engineer at Port of Brisbane was a bold move — one that went against her career expectations. Little did she know it would turn out to be the best decision she ever made.

With an impressive career spanning over two decades in water and wastewater engineering, Simin took a leap of faith when she transitioned to the dynamic world of port operations.

“My background is in water engineering and I have previously worked for councils and utility companies. Transitioning to the Port meant I would be working in a new space as it had a primary focus on land development and marine operations, so this was a tough decision at the time.”

After making the leap, Simin found herself thriving in an environment that constantly challenged and excited her.

“After more than two years here, I can confidently say that decision was the right one for me.”

Today, as a Utilities Engineer, Simin plays a crucial role in keeping Port of Brisbane running smoothly. She manages the Port’s water and wastewater networks, oversees wastewater pump stations and ensures regulatory compliance — all while leading key infrastructure projects that drive efficiency and sustainability.

"I’m managing a few different and challenging projects at the moment, like upgrading sewer manholes and optimising network pressure. There’s always something new on the horizon which keeps things interesting. It’s a very exciting environment to be part of.”

A place where people matter

For Simin, the real difference at the Port of Brisbane is the people, and since joining us she’s found a real sense of belonging here - something she felt she was missing at larger organisations.

"As an immigrant with no family here but my son, I was looking for that sense of connection. I didn’t find that support in other big companies I worked for, but at Port of Brisbane, I did."

The collaborative culture at Port of Brisbane has been a key feature of Simin’s time here. Whether it’s a manager stepping in to balance workloads or a colleague picking up an initiative to help push it forward, there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.

“I really want to emphasise the supportive culture at Port of Brisbane. I have the friendliest, most supportive colleagues and it feels like we’re a family. That’s been a key reason for enhancing my work efficiency here. When I’m happy at work, I’m able to perform at my best.”

A future full of possibilities

Outside of work, Simin’s an avid basketball fan. As a teenager, she played for a club and developed a deep love for the sport. In the evenings, you can catch her at her local basketball court, shooting some shots.

She is also passionate about travelling and has a goal to visit every beach in Australia.

At work, Simin is a driven professional who thrives on constant learning and growth. At Port of Brisbane, she’s found a workplace that has matched her enthusiasm and ambitious plans for the future.

"The Port is happy to support us in achieving Chartered Engineer status, which is amazing. It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time, but it was costly, and other workplaces weren’t willing to pay for it. Here, they are, and that means a lot.”

For anyone considering joining Port of Brisbane, Simin has simple but strong advice.

"If your target is growth and continuous learning, Port of Brisbane is the place for you. They’re generous in providing opportunities. You have to prove yourself, work hard and be persistent, but if you do, the payoff is there. Your efforts will be seen and rewarded."

From a leap of faith to a career filled with purpose, support and opportunity, Simin’s journey is proof that sometimes, the best careers are the ones you never imagined.
