FAQs

Who can use PortNet?
You do not have to operate a business within the Brisbane port precinct to access PortNet services. The only requirement for access to the Internet using PortNet is a line-of-sight from your business to a PortNet PoP. PortNet has a network of PoPs strategically located to offer maximum connectivity options - contact PortNet to find out where your nearest PoP is located.

What technology does PortNet use?
PortNet uses DSSS radio technology to provide twoway, high-speed Internet connectivity. This technology minimises the impact of noise and interference to ensure a reliable connection.

How does PortNet wireless work?
From a customer's computer, Internet bound data is routed through the LAN to the digital transceiver. Data is then transmitted as a wireless signal via the CPE antenna to a PortNet PoP. The PoP routes the data to the Internet, and receives a corresponding response. The PoP then transmits reply data back to the local antenna and transceiver. This received data is routed through the LAN back to the originating computer.

A standard installation involveslocating a plastic enclosure, containing the digital transceiver and any amplification equipment, inside the customers building. A grid antenna is mounted on the roof or an elevated position and is connected to the enclosure devices with coaxial cable. A cat5 ethernet cable connects the transceiver to the LAN. Mains power is then extended to the enclosure for operation.

This shared fibre backbone allows Brisbane PortNet customers to connect to the Internet and other branch offices via dial-in, ISDN, ADSL, frame relays or wireless systems. Routing equipment that supports a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) is housed at each location and provides a secure, reliable, encrypted connection between branch offices.
