New suburb for booming Port of Brisbane

It’s official! Australia’s fastest-growing port is now one of Brisbane’s newest suburbs, following a Place Name Decision Notice recently gazetted by the Queensland Government.
The new suburb of Port of Brisbane encompasses Fisherman Islands and Whyte Island, has a working population of more than 1,600 people, and is home to Australia’s third largest container port.
Port of Brisbane Corporation Chairman David Harrison said the naming of the new suburb would help to increase people’s awareness of where the Port of Brisbane is located.
“While many people know that Brisbane has a major seaport, they are unsure of its location.
“The creation of the new suburb means directional signs to the port, which until now have featured three location names, will become consistent.
“This should make finding the port, and the many businesses within the area, easier for customers and the community alike.”
Mr Harrison said that port-related activities had been progressively relocating downstream since the 1970s, when Fisherman Islands was identified as the preferred future location for the Port of Brisbane.
“As most port operations relocate from Hamilton to the mouth of the river over the next couple of years, the Port of Brisbane will become the centre of maritime activity.
“The deep-water access available at the mouth of the Brisbane River, combined with the port’s capacity for growth, ensure that we are well positioned to service the increasing size of vessels and cargo volumes into Brisbane, well into the future,” Mr Harrison said.
The postcode for the Port of Brisbane is 4178.
