Agreement streamlines Fisherman Islands operations

17 January 2002

Patrick The Australian Stevedore and the Port of Brisbane Corporation have signed a variation to the Heads of Agreement, negotiated in October 2001.

The original Heads of Agreement allowed for the staged relocation of the company’s facilities from Hamilton to Fisherman Islands at Berths 8 and 9.

While the variation still caters for the relocation of the company’s facilities from Hamilton, the new agreement provides for the withdrawal of Patrick’s Fisherman Islands container operations from Berths 1, 2 and 3 to be relocated downstream of Berth 7. This still requires the fast tracking of Berth 9.

Berths 1, 2 and 3 and the associated back-up land behind the berths will become subject to new tenure and management arrangements which will accommodate not only the short and long term plans of Patrick, but also satisfy the Corporation’s needs for both common-user and leased areas for third party operators in this new precinct.

Port of Brisbane Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Graham Mulligan, said this commitment by Patrick is further proof of the acceptance of the Australia TradeCoast precinct by corporate Australia. The precinct offers industry world-class infrastructure and is a significant contributor to the economy of Queensland, creating significant new job opportunities during construction of the new Fisherman Islands facilities.

“This new agreement will ensure that the car industry will be provided with the flexibility and cost efficiencies required to guarantee its continued growth through Brisbane. It will also allow the port to ensure that the container handling terminals are located in the same precinct thus eliminating unnecessary costs when growth rates demand further expansion”, Mr Mulligan said.
