New Wharf for Booming Port of Brisbane

3 May 2006

The Port of Brisbane Corporation is to build a new 210m general-purpose wharf at the Port of Brisbane at the mouth of the Brisbane River.

The new berth will be constructed adjacent to the port’s coal berth, and will be used principally for bulk and break-bulk  cargoes.

It will also have the capacity to load and unload a range of other cargo, including motor vehicles and project cargoes when required, providing increased flexibility for port users.

The Port of Brisbane Corporation will spend $46 million on the new wharf and associated infrastructure, which is planned to incorporate a general-purpose terminal, 2ha of heavy-duty pavement, a 3,200m2 cargo shed, and an office and amenities building.

The Corporation will soon be seeking expressions of interest for an operator for the new berth, the construction of which is scheduled to begin in May/June this year for completion in early 2008.

The new general-purpose wharf is the latest in a series of major infrastructure developments at the port.

During the last 12 months a 28ha short-term car storage precinct, associated flyover and a dedicated container wharf (Wharf 9) have been completed at the Port of Brisbane and are now fully operational.

Construction on an additional dedicated container wharf (Wharf 10) has also commenced and is scheduled for completion early in 2008, with plans for the construction of two more already underway.

Plans have also been developed to enhance shipping access to the port by further deepening the main shipping channel in the short term, and straightening and shortening the channel in the long term.
