Issued by the Minister for Transport and Main Roads

4 July 2005

The Port of Brisbane Corporation's acting chair Mr David Harrison has been appointed the permanent chair, Transport and Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas announced today.

Mr Lucas said Catherine Sinclair had been re-appointed as deputy chair, and three new board members had also been appointed.

"Mr Harrison, a well respected former trade union official and leader, has worked tirelessly as the acting POB chair," Mr Lucas said.

Mr Harrison is also on the boards of QMI Solutions, Queensland Investment Corporation, Sun Super Pty Ltd Superannuation Fund and Industrial Supplies Office (I.S.O.) Queensland.

"Similarly, Ms Sinclair was appointed to the POB board in 2001 and her skills in corporate, strategic and business planning have been an asset to the board," he said.

The other new appointees were Emeritus Professor Ted Brown, Clare Endicott and Peter Lancaster. Mr Lucas said both Professor Brown and Ms Endicott had proven themselves on the board of Queensland Rail and their experience would be invaluable to the Port of Brisbane.

"Professor Brown has a long and impressive resume with civil and mining experience and general management experience as a company director and chairman," he said.

"Ms Endicott is an experienced litigator and partner with Macrossan's Lawyers, specialising in industrial law, administrative law and insurance work."

He said Mr Lancaster, currently the CEO of Food Spectrum Group and Nu-Mega Ingredients, had been appointed for his management and strategy skills.

"Mr Lancaster has local and overseas managerial experience in some of the world's largest firms such as Unilever," Mr Lucas said.

"I am confident that these new appointments will guide the Port of Brisbane's growth into the coming years," he said.

"The Port of Brisbane is one of the top three container ports in Australia with one of the biggest capital city port tonnages in the nation," Mr Lucas said.

"With total infrastructure investment of more than $600 million over the past 25 years, the Port of Brisbane is a deep-water port providing container terminals and bulk cargo facilities for a diversified range of commodities, 30 berths and nearly 7,500 metres of quayline.

"Total trade through the port is currently around 23 million tonnes, and this is projected to increase to around 55 million tonnes by the year 2025," Mr Lucas said.

Mr Lucas also acknowledged the contribution of former member Susan Rix who has now been appointed to the Queensland Rail board.

Mr Lucas said ports such as Brisbane were a vital component in development of the state, making a major contribution to the economy and creating new jobs.
