Mariners Requested to Exercise Caution

Public Notice issued by the FPE Seawall Alliance

29 October 2003

Mariners and members of the public are requested to exercise caution when in the general vicinity of the FPE Seawall Alliance construction site at the mouth of the Brisbane River.

In August 2003 the FPE Seawall Alliance began constructing 4,500 metres of seawall at the mouth of the Brisbane River for the Port of Brisbane Corporation. This is the first stage of a project to ultimately reclaim 230 hectares of land at the Fisherman Islands port facility.

Upcoming works involve the use of an underwater pipeline to carry sand from the existing reclamation area to the north-eastern and eastern extremities of the project site, where a shallow sand mound will be placed prior to being covered with rock. This activity, along with the presence of construction barges, large dredging equipment, submerged anchor wires, as well as other rock placement activities at the site, will result in the presence of submerged obstacles, which may be hazardous to marine vessels.

In accordance with Maritime Safety Queensland guidelines, yellow flashing marker buoys have been placed to ensure the construction site is clearly delineated. Safety warning signs are also being erected.

The risks associated with the submerged obstacles and hazards at the site make it essential that all mariners and members of the public exercise caution when in the general vicinity of the works. To maintain navigational safety, mariners and members of the public are also requested to operate and transit outside this area from 1 November 2003.

Safety warning signs advising of the need to keep clear of the site are in the process of being erected at all public boat ramps from Wellington Point to Scarborough.

Construction works are expected to continue until approximately 30 April 2005.
