William Gunn Jetty, Marina and Kiosk Complete Harbour Facelift

2 July 2005

A 62-berth public marina, refurbished WM Gunn Jetty and a new café, the Jetty Kiosk, complete the two-year improvements program at Manly Harbour.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas, said the $3.6million improvements program, which also included the queuing pontoon at the southern boat ramp and new picnic shelters and gardens at Norfolk Point, were the icing on the cake for Manly Harbour.

“The harbour has long been a favourite among Manly locals and the boating community,” he said.

“The new Jetty Kiosk and public marina not only improve boating safety and the public amenity of the harbour, but serve to showcase one of Manly’s landmarks, the William Gunn Jetty.”

Mr Lucas said the two-part jetty refurbishment comprised the Queensland government-funded repair and upgrade of the William Gunn Jetty to meet disability and safety standards, while the rebuilding of the timber superstructure of the 70-year-old Manly Jetty that adjoins it, was funded by the Port of Brisbane Corporation.

Corporation Chief Executive Jeff Coleman said the corporation was very pleased with the results which had improved public access and amenities while retaining and enhancing the area’s character.

“The original pen moorings, which were built in the early 1960s and had reached the end of their useful life, have been replaced by a state-of-the-art floating marina that can accommodate 62 walk-on walk-off berths ranging from nine to 20 metres,” he said.

“The installation of the new marina is not only practical, it is attractive, adding to the general appeal of this section of the harbour,” Mr Coleman said.

Works at Norfolk Point and the installation of the queuing pontoon at the southern boat ramp were completed earlier this year.
