$65 Million State-of-the-Art Freight, Customs and Trade Precinct Another First for Port of Brisbane
15 February 2006
Transport and logistics company, Tzaneros Enterprises Pty Ltd, is set to begin construction of the first stage of an 8ha state-of-the-art warehouse precinct at Port Gate Estate at the Port of Brisbane.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, said the new $65 million development would bring freight forwarding, customs broking, and import and export businesses together in the one precinct.
Mr Lucas said he welcomed the “one-stop-shop” concept being pioneered by Tzaneros Enterprises’ Managing Director, Steven Tzaneros, and Finance Director, Mirco Debelak.
“Drawing these elements together in the one precinct makes good business sense,” Mr Lucas said.
Mr Tzaneros said that while freight forwarders and customs brokers competed against each other for business, they were also required to work closely together to service their customers, particularly when securing container space.
He said that interest in the new concept was high, with several leading freight forwarders having expressed interest in the proposed development and three formal expressions of interest already received.
The purpose-built development, to be constructed on an 8ha site on the western side of Osprey Drive at the Port of Brisbane, will be managed by Tzaneros Enterprises and will incorporate 42,375m2 of warehousing and 4,500m2 of office space, carparking for 282 cars, and a container storage area.
Stage 1 involves the construction of three of six warehouses planned for the development. Warehouse 1 is expected to be completed by the end of July this year and will incorporate 5,620m2 of warehousing and 1,000m2 of office space. Warehouses 2 and 3 are earmarked for completion in 2007.
Port of Brisbane Corporation Chairman, David Harrison, said the new development continued the positive relationship between the Corporation and Steven Tzaneros, who, along with his brother Terry, owned and operated transport company Smith Bros at the Port of Brisbane from 1995, before selling the business to P&O Ports Ltd in 2001.
Mr Harrison said the Tzaneros Enterprises development was the first of several port-related logistics businesses expected to be established at the 15ha Port Gate Estate over the next two to three years.
He said that the Port Gate Estate was one of a number of new developments planned for the Port of Brisbane in 2006, where continued strong growth in container traffic, and similar trends in general cargo and motor-vehicle trade, were expected to drive ongoing expansion.
“The design of the port’s tenth wharf is expected to be completed later this month,” he said.
“Our 28ha long-term car storage precinct, which has been developed to cater for the growing motor-vehicle import market and accommodate motor-vehicle storage operations that have been relocated to the port from Hamilton, is nearing completion, with the first tenant, Prixcar, having recently commenced operations.”
Mr Harrison said the Corporation’s strategy to divest non-core port property to fund future expansion at the port would continue.
