Environmental Management
Objectives and Targets
Environmental objectives and targets are performance requirements that are, where practicable, quantifiable. Our objectives and targets, which are annually reviewed, ensure that the port’s activities and services have a minimal environmental impact. We also seek objectives and targets that will provide sustainable port operations.
Each year we select a range of specific objectives and targets that become our principal objectives and targets and provide a focus for that year. Six of these principal objectives and targets for 2005/2006 are:
Air quality |
|---|---|
Objective: To reduce the impact of air quality parameters as a result of our activities and services, and identify air quality limitations which constrain port development opportunities |
Target: Identify and adopt measures to reduce greenhouse emissions from port operations |
Amenity |
Objective: Ensure environmental issues of public amenity and stakeholder concern are considered in strategic planning and development assessment |
Target: Provide technical input and resources into the amenity design and establishment of landscaped areas around Port Central |
Flora and Fauna |
Objective: To minimise potential adverse impacts on the conservation values of the port environs through investigation, monitoring and managing the changes to the natural environment |
Target: Ensure identified/nominated ecologically sensitive areas are retained and protected from development |
Systems Management |
Objective: To ensure the Corporation’s progress and performance on environmental measures is adequately tracked and monitored |
Target:
Waste |
Objective: Reduce natural resource consumption and waste requiring on-site disposal to land-fill |
Target: Reduce the remaining 20% of recyclables found in the general waste stream |
Water |
Objective: To reduce the environmental impacts of stormwater and other surface water releases from Corporation activities, services and lessees |
Target: Develop and test predictive stormwater quality model for (1) existing island operations and (2) use model to evaluate stormwater discharge options for FPE develoment |
