An Investigation of the Terrestrial Fauna and Habitat Values of the Port of Brisbane Corporation Lands

June 2000

Prepared by: WBM Oceanics Australia

WBM Oceanics Australia was commissioned to undertake a study of the PBC lands to provide an initial description and assessment of the fauna habitat diversity and extent, species richness and fauna assemblege of each habitat, and key features important to fauna within each habitat.

WBM Oceanics undertook a review of existing information and carried out field investigations during May 2000. The study site included Fisherman Islands, Whyte Island and Clunies Flats and seven habitat types were identified and surveyed. The habitats included Built Environs; Open Grasslands; Landscaped Areas; Freshwater Lake; Rail Loop; Drainage Lines; Mangrove Forests, Claypans and Saltmarsh; and the Environmental Pond.

Results of the survey recorded a total of 82 terrestrial fauna species at the study sites, including 4 mammal, 1 reptile, 2 amphibian and 75 bird species. The report suggested that up to 205 species are known or likely to occur in the study site, with 18% of these species (all birds) listed as species of significance, 1 species (Eastern Curlew) listed as rare and 13 species listed as significant at a City-wide level by Brisbane City Council.

The report provided recommendations for future management of flora and fauna, including continuation of feral management programs and continued monitoring.
