PBPL has a diverse range of stakeholders, from local community members to port operators, freight forwarders, importers and exporters, and government agencies. In fact, any individual or group that is affected, or has an interest in the activities of the port, we consider stakeholders.
One of our primary forums for engaging with our local stakeholders is the Community Consultation Committee (CCC). The CCC meets several times each year and is made up of representatives from local business, environmental and community groups with an interest in the port’s impacts on neighbouring communities.
Providing opportunities for education
To showcase the day-to-day operations of the port, we offer port tours for educational, community and seniors groups, and also run an Explorer Tour for individuals. Tours give participants an opportunity to see, up close, how the different facilities at the port work, and an insight into the role it plays in our everyday lives. To add another dimension to the tour experience, visitors can access our Shorebird Roost – the largest constructed roost for migratory shorebirds on the east coast of Australia.
Our community partnerships
PBPL’s sponsorship program provides support for a range of community initiatives across the areas of education, youth leadership, environment, community welfare and arts and cultural projects. We support dozens of different initiatives each year, but our main focus is on establishing long-term partnerships in order to provide maximum value for both the recipient and the company. The following is an example of some of the major partnerships we currently have in place:
Blue Care Community Wellness Program
This program is run through Blue Care’s Eastside Community Care branch, and provides recreational activities, health education sessions, and a directory service for local Wynnum/Manly residents. The program includes Quick Health Checks, offered at markets and shopping centres, where a Blue Care nurse checks blood pressure, blood glucose levels, weight and waist measurements. In the second half of 2011, a new program will be run, called the Chronic Disease Wellness Program.
Smith Family Tech Pack Program
Through the Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, the Tech Pack Program aims to facilitate greater digital literacy and access for financially disadvantaged children and their families within the Redlands community. The project provides internet-ready computers, 12 months wireless internet access, skills training and ongoing support to eligible families.
Mangrove Watch
The Mangrove Watch program is run by the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland’s Bayside branch. It aims to monitor the health of mangroves in Moreton Bay by using trained volunteers to regularly collect data from various sites. Data is made publicly available through the Mangrove Watch website.
Crime Stoppers
Crime Stoppers Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a telephone hotline for members of the community to provide anonymous information about criminal activity.
Lifeline school-based counselling
We support Lifeline Community Care by sponsoring a counsellor to work one day a week with parents, children and their families at Wynnum North State School. The counselling is a free service that aims to support children and their families with the difficulties and the challenges that can arise during the school years.
